PROJECT 1

POETIC JOURNEY STRUCTURE - SPATIAL TRANSLATION

For the 1st project, it is a group project consists of 8 people. This project focuses on the poetic architecture that forms expressive experiential spatial journey which tells a story and engages with the users through their individual senses. In this project, the task is to romanticize a rainforest and translate it into an intriguing narrative that will then be transformed into two individual standalone Poetic Journey Structure.

We are required to come up with one narrative which will then be transform as one concentric journey structure and one linear journey structure (2 Poetic Journey Structure).

REFLECTION

Upon completing the 1st project, I was able to understand more about the concept of poetic architecture and how to convey it into architectural spaces. I was also able to learn about the differences between concentric and linear journey structure and how although both of them may share the same narrative, each of it have their own journey which portrays an interesting and unique experience to its users.

ā€‹

More importantly, I was able to romanticize the story of the rainforest and through its different spatial qualities and typologies, it creates an interesting and meaningful engaging experience to its users.

ā€‹

From this project I was able to obtain 2 TGCS which are:

ā€‹

  • Communication skills

- I was able to improve my communication skills by doing discussions and exchanging ideas that I had with my group members when doing this project.

ā€‹

  • Thinking and problem-solving skills

- While doing this project we also encounter some challenges and difficulties along the way, but thankfully we were able to overcome those problems and find a way on how to solve it by analyzing and discussing the problems together. We also went through a lot of trials and errors on how we could make our ideas better.

PROJECT 2 (A)

THE DISCOVERY CENTER (GENIUS LOCI) -

SITE ANALYSIS, SITE RESPONSE AND DESIGN CONCEPT

The 2nd project is a group project consists of 16 people.

In this project, students went on a site visit to Kampung Janda Baik, Bentong, Pahang to study on the society, culture, history, memory and the landscape of the area as well as discovering the genius loci of Kg Janda Baik.

The aim for this project is to design a Discovery Center for Kampung Janda Baik that responds to the sense of place with a strong engagement and relationship to the site and programmatic requirements. Through this, students are able to design a structure that is appropriate to the place and its meaning, and also contributes to its context.

ā€‹

Tasks 1, 2, 3, 4(A), and 5 are done in a group while task 4(B) is an individual task where students are to produce a personal interpretation and perception sketches of the Macro site in the form of serial sketches.

REFLECTION

For my 2nd group project, I had a lot of fun and meaningful experience going on a site visit to Kg Janda Baik. It was a great experience getting to know about the place and it's beautiful surrounding. During the trip I was also able to get to know more about my group members which made the work progress to run more smoothly and fun.

ā€‹

Apart from that, from the site visit I was able to learn about the stories, history, their daily activities, and even the cultures from the locals around the area who are kind enough to answers our questions. With their guidance, it helps us a lot in making this project a success which in turn also helped in our own individual project later on.

ā€‹

The TGCS that I was able to obtain from this project are:

ā€‹

  • Lifelong learning

- From the site visit and interviewing some of the locals of Kg Janda Baik, I was able to get a better understanding about what they as a client, would like to imagine the kind of structures they would want in the future. I got to know what kind of experience they would want and how it would affect them. With this interaction, I was able to understand what to expect for my future projects in the future.

ā€‹

  • Communication skills

- Working in a bigger group helps a lot in making the workflow more smoothly since we were able to have more opinions and ideas on what needed to do. But while doing this project, we also faced some problems with our communication which led us to encounter some problems along the way. Thankfully, after we made some compromise and discussed it together, we managed to solve the problem and finished this project withing 4 days after the trip,

PROJECT 2 (B)

THE DISCOVERY CENTER

(VISITOR CENTER FOR KAMPUNG JANDA BAIK, PAHANG)

The final project is a continuation of the previous project 2(a). In this project, it is an individual work where the site data analysis that were studied from the previous project are used to help in designing the Discovery Center.

ā€‹

The Discovery Center can either be about the people, history, culture, surroundings, or even the activities that are associated to Kampung Janda Baik.

ā€‹

For this project, students are required to emphasize a strong engagement and relationship to the site, people, spatial experiences which will then be transformed into a poetic structure.

REFLECTION

For my final project, it was definitely a challenging experience for me especially since this semester has a big jump from my previous semester where most of us are using hand drawn drawings to now being more digitalized from using Revit and SketchUp. Even so, I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to learn the basics on how to use it for my final project. I am sure that with more practice I am able to improve my skills overtime.

ā€‹

Although I've faced a lot of challenges doing this project, I also gained a lot of new knowledge and experiences from it. Through this project, I learned how to implement all of the experiences, information and analysis that I've done from my 1st and 2nd project into my final project. I also now have a better understanding on what I needed to improve for my Discovery Center to make it better in the future.

ā€‹

Through this final project, these are the TGCS that I was able to obtain:

ā€‹

  • Thinking and problem-solving skills

- Working independently for this project allows me to explore a lot of different ways on how to come out with ideas on how to create this Discovery Center while also finding the solutions if I encountered any problems along the way.

ā€‹

  • Communication skills

- Through discussing with my tutors, classmates, and friends, about their opinions and advice on my work, I was able to not only gain better understanding on what I needed to do or improve, but I also get to improve my communication skills and confidence when speaking with them.

OVERALL REFLECTION

This module has given me a better understanding of what poetic architecture means and through this, I also gain a lot of knowledge about modifying elements and the concept of genius loci and how both of them correlates in creating a poetic journey inside a structure.

Although I encountered a lot of challenges when doing the projects, I am grateful that I was able to overcome it and finished all of the projects successfully at the end. With this, I also know that I still have a lot to practices and improvements on my skills to do so that I can be better for my future semesters. All in all, I had gain great and fun experiences for my 3rd semester in architecture studio which I am grateful for thanks to my tutors especially Mr. Chern, who helped a lot in giving us guidance throughout this whole semester.
